To prepare for the Assignment, read the summary of Lau v Nichols 1974 and investigate existing bilingual-education legislation. Examine the reading that details the Bilingual Education Act of 1968 and reflect on the following statement:
“The [Bilingual Education Act of 1968] encouraged instruction in English and multicultural awareness in the wake of the Civil Rights Movement although it did not require bilingual programs. The act also gave school districts the opportunity to provide bilingual education programs without violating segregation law.” (K12 Academics, 2012).
Directions for Presentation:
Create a presentation for education leaders that addresses the key programmatic or environmental components needed when implementing legislation and policies around bilingual education practices.
The presentation will be titled: The Effects of Bilingual-Education Legislation on Education Practices. There are two sections in this presentation:
Section One: Education Practices Affected by Bilingual Education
Identify an education setting. Present research and examples of how bilingual-education legislation has influenced the following three areas:
Multicultural Education
Gifted and Talented
English Language Learners (ELL)
Section Two: Recommendations for Future Practices
Based on your findings in section one, provide recommendations for how to improve bilingual-education practices in your education organization.
Presentation Requirements:
The presentation must be able to be presented in a public forum using a presentation application (PowerPoint, Prezi, Empressr, SlideRocket) and including a multimedia format.
The presentation should be engaging and informative.
The presentation will be submitted in the “Notes” format—with either a written narrative of the presentation that aligns with the slides, or with an audio of each presentation slide.
