American Literature
For your final essay, you will write a four page, thesis-driven analysis
in which you discuss how two texts render some kind of invisible
ideology visible to the reader. Once you pick your two texts, think
about what they reveal about a specific ideological belief. You will
then write a thesis in which you make a clear argument about the
relationship between the two texts through your lens. Please note that
you SHOULD NOT COMPARE AND CONTRAST THE TWO TEXTS… you want to have a coherent argument about the relationship. Your thesis cannot say, for
example, that “both ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’ and Wuthering Heights deal
with gender in different ways.” You want to say something like this:
“Both ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’ and Wuthering Heights reveal how male
authority turns medical diagnosis into a patriarchal tool to oppress
women.”

You may write about any two literary texts (poem, short story, novel, or
play) we have read this semester. One of the two texts may also be a
film we watched in class or as a bonus assignment this semester. One of
the texts may be the text your wrote about for the first essay.
Be sure to have an introduction where you set up your thesis by
introducing the two texts you will use and by invoking the language of
your lens. Be sure to include the title, year, and author of each text.
Include your thesis statement.

Organize your body paragraphs to prove your point. Think through what
you have to do, step by step, to make your case. You will need, for
example, to zero in on common language in each text that you will
interpret through your lens. That’s how you establish the link between
the texts. Where are the moments in Wuthering Heights and Harvest where
the relationship between race and class is clear? How does each text
explain this? What are the common ideas, words, etc? How can I use the
lens to interpret these moments together?
Be sure to structure your body paragraphs as discussed in class and as
described in the Writing Rules handout.

Please note that while you may write about the texts individually in the
first body paragraphs of your essay, the last few paragraphs should
discuss both texts simultaneously, making connections between the words
in each text. If you do not talk about both texts together and make
connections between specific words in each text within the same
paragraphs (by the end of the body), you will not receive a grade higher
than a C since you will not be able to prove your thesis.
Follow all the rules in the Writing Rules Handout.
Have a conclusion where you speculate on the larger significance of your
argument.
Please note that this assignment requires you to utilize everything
you’ve learned about analyzing literature in a larger context over the
course of this semester. I’ll be looking to see all these components
when I grade your essay. Feel free to meet or e-mail with me to discuss
the assignment, your specific argument, etc.
