Immediately after completing my undergraduate coursework in January, I applied and got a chance to work at a top rated neuroscience lab at UCLA. Even though I had faith in getting the opportunity, it still came as a surprise when they accepted me, especially when the administrator offered compensation. The laboratory provided me with an opportunity to work with animal models as opposed to the molecular research and human subject studies I was accustomed to in my previous lab experiences.

Currently, on a daily basis, we would thin a mice’s skull, and record electronically and optically the effect of ultrasound on migraine via the alterations in cortical spreading depression.
At the same time, I worked remotely on data analysis and write-ups for a first-authored project back in the liver research lab in Taiwan. The project entailed clinical data obtained from thousands of patients across the region, and it took us years to collect. I feel satisfied and glad that the project is finally coming to fruition. In the project, we explored whether we could incorporate viral genetic factors into a non-invasive test to realize higher sensitivity and specificity for identification of liver cirrhosis. Traditional tests use only biochemical factors and therefore require a liver biopsy to ascertain the diagnosis. It would be quite fulfilling if the experiment works to eliminate such need.

I spent the rest of my time at the algorithmic trading club at UCLA to finally finish the projects that we have been handling over the years, including one project on arbitrage and one on moving average cross over. With the extra time, I was able to invest more effort in assisting new members to acclimatize with the area by giving tutorials with presentations and videos. I also volunteered with Interaxon at UCLA to help teach K-12 neuroscience; a move that enabled me to bond well with the community. My goal is to still be able to grow intellectually, socially, and emotionally even without the help of a university.
