may include additional figures, images, graphs, maps, etc. You should
write your own caption for
each figure. Ideally, the figure and caption should be
self-contained…a reader should be able to
understand the figure without referring to the body of the text. Thus,
figure captions are
sometimes lengthy. At the end of the caption, in parentheses, you should
reference the author(s)
of the figure if you did not prepare it yourself. The correct style is:
(after Einarsson et al., 1979) or (modified from Egils and Grettis, 1240)
The references should then appear in the reference list or bibliography
of the paper. The figures
can be on separate pages after the body of the paper (one or two figures
per page) or you may
integrate them into the body of text.

3. References can be in any standard academic format (as long as that
format is consistently
used), but it is best to use one of the following two forms (I prefer
using the first –
parenthetical):
a. In the text, place the author’s name(s) (use et. al., meaning and
others, when more than two
INTL 3315 / SPRING 2018
authors) and the date of publication in parenthesis (Wegener et al.,
2003). The reference list is
a list of references in alphabetical order by the author’s last name.
This is the standard form
used in most scientific literature.

b. In the text, place a superscripted number1 for each reference when it
is first referred to.
Reuse the same number if that reference is used again. The reference
list should be in
numerical order with each reference appearing just once. No ibids or
endnotes!
4. If you use web sources, make sure that you reference them in a way
that makes clear who
authored the material. The academic credentials of the author and/or
their position or institution
are critical in evaluating the validity of the source.
5. Assume that your audience is this class. That means you can assume
the background
knowledge is what we have covered in class and from the assigned readings.
