Farming is a critical component of the rural economy (CPRE 2015). In England and Wales, for instance, more than 262 million acres are under intensive agriculture (Defra 2014). Donnermeyer (2018) indicates that in 2012 alone farming generated £3.8 billion; however, the collective income went up by £0.5 billion in 2013. Inasmuch as the UK’s rural economy is highly dependent on farming, the issue of rural criminality is not only impacting the industry, but has also not obtained the needed attention from policy makers, an aspect that seem to thwart policing initiatives. Even as police forces endeavor to mitigate farm crime, where machinery and flocks of sheep are stolen, fewer police resources have been deployed in rural areas (Morris, Norris and Dowell 2019). The fact that urban centers experience the highest level of criminality than rural areas could be reason why research and resource allocation in combating crime is largely urban-centric.
