  1. Summary of Assignment

        • Reflection is an enormous part of teaching.
        • In this assignment you will document 2 critical literacy events that you have observed or participated in during weeks 1 – 5.
        • These events could take place in the home, community, classroom, pre-school or day care centre.
        • Using the Reflective Model based on ALACT (Korthagen), you will analyse each event to demonstrate your understanding of literacy teaching and/or learning as detailed in the various topics covered in weeks 1 – 5.
        • For Example :
        1. You may have witnessed a reading session in a local library and describe what you saw and heard in relation to what you have learned about teaching reading.
        1. You will need to support your reflection by reference to the various readings, guest speakers, lectures, tutorials and resources; and your own research.
        2. You will also be required to outline your evolving beliefs about your role as a teacher of literacy and describe how what you learned might be translated into your future professional practice.
        3. Finally the different stages of the ALACT model will be used appropriately.

IMPORTANT THINGS TO NOTE:

  1. The questions that follow are a guide only and do not necessarily constitute different sections of the assignment. We should be able to identify three distinct sections in each of your critical events.
    1. A description of the event (use the questions from the Action section of the ALACT model to help you write this)
    2. Your reflection (use questions from the ‘Looking back’ and ‘Awareness of essential aspects’ of the ALACT model to help you write this)
    3. How this has influenced your evolving beliefs as a teacher of literacy (use the questions from the ‘Creating alternative actions’ and ‘Trial new approach’ section of the ALACT model to help you write this)
  2. You may or may not be a participant in the event.
  3. The event does not have to occur in a classroom or school.
  4. A critical literacy event is one which has contributed significantly to your learning about literacy teaching and /or learning and helped you make connections to the learning presented in this course.
  5. You must make connections to the content and readings of this course in your reflection. This could be done in some or all of the different sections of the assignment.

    • Did I consider this a successful literacy learning event? Why/why not?
