QUESTIONS:
1. What does it mean when sociologists define race as being “arbitrary,
relative and subjective”? Focus on the chapter’s term “social
construction of race”.
2. How do bi-racial children (like President Obama) make the definition
of race hinge on society’s perceptions?
3. Look up online W.E.B. DuBois’ concepts of: (1) “the veil”, (2)
“double consciousness” and (3) “the color line”. Read the attached
excerpt from DuBois’ famous book “The Souls of Black Folk”. Discuss them
briefly.

4. Watch the following videos and match each video to one of these three
concepts: (1) “the veil”, (2) “double consciousness” and (3) “the color
line”. (Warning: some very vulgar language in the form of swearing and
racial epithets. If this is offensive to you, please let me know and I
can assign you alternate readings.)
