Appendix 1: Coursework 2 – Dialectic debate
What is a dialectic debate?
Dialectic debate usually denotes a structured exchange of propositions (theses) and counter-propositions (antitheses) on a given conceptual theme. The dialectic method (dialectics) has its roots in philosophy where it encouraged critical analysis of propositions, counter-propositions and the synthesis of new ideas based on the propositions. The dialectic debate (e.g. Socratic Method, Hegelian dialectics & Kantian dialectics) have in the past, been used to resolve disagreements using the most persuasive and logical reasoning or argument. Immanuel Kant used the term “transcendental dialectic” in Critique of Pure Reason when he discussed the illusion of perceptions that transcend conscious experience. Hegel on the other hand provided a simple model of dialectics which he called the “triadic development” (figure1 below):
Figure 1: Hegel’s Simple Dialectic Model
The Hegelian dialectical formula: A (thesis) versus B (anti-thesis) equals C (synthesis). For example: If (A) my idea of freedom conflicts with (B) your idea of freedom then (C) neither of us can be free until everyone agrees to be a slave.

A synthesis of a dialectic debate addressing the question: To what extent can psychologists be objective in the study of gender, race or sexuality? You are required to select one of the above topics (gender, race or sexuality). You will then put forward a proposition for (Thesis) and a proposition against (Antithesis) on Personal blog. Propositions
& counter-propositions will need to demonstrate critical understanding of the chosen topic. From this debate you will be expected to produce your 1000 word synthesis essay. Your synthesis essay can use material from both sides of the debate. Thus you may highlight the key points from the thesis and antithesis and then offer a balanced synthesis. For the synthesis you are expected to use evidence to support your arguments from the literature. Please note that reference list will not count toward the final word count.
NOTES: A 1000 word synthesis of a dialectic debate addressing the question: To what extent can psychologists be objective in the study of gender, race or sexuality? Students are required to select one of the above topics (gender, race or sexuality).
You are required to post two comments on your Personal blog addressing the above question. One comment will support the argument (thesis) that psychologists are objective in the study of gender, race or sexuality, while the other comment will support the argument (anti-thesis) that psychologists are not objective. You will then be required to write a 1000 word summary of the arguments presented in the personal blog debate with a concluding statement that addresses the question: To what extent can psychologists be objective in the study of gender, race or sexuality? Students are required to select one of the above topics (gender, race or sexuality).
