ASSIGNMENT 1: ANALYSIS OF EXPERIENCE
The assignment brief is as follows:
PLEASE USE the module LEADERSHIP IN A TELECOMMUNICATIONS COMPANY
and critically analyse them with reference to an organisation in which you have worked or with which you are familiar. The maximum length for this assignment is 1,000 words. This will account for 50% of your overall grade on the module.
Assignment 1 Guidance
The objective is to explore some area(s) of the module that interest you in the context of a real organisation.
Most organisational issues are complex and it is likely that more than one factor may be important in any situation. For example, one of the challenges of leadership is about understanding and managing the organisation’s culture, and this may well affect motivation within the organisation. However, attempting to cover too many areas in one assignment will inevitably lead to a superficial piece of work. It is perfectly acceptable to comment on how different factors interact but focus the discussion on one or two topics to provide greater depth of analysis.
The purpose of the assignment is to utilise theory to analyse practice. An assignment that makes little or no reference to a real organisational situation and appropriate theoretical and conceptual issues will not fulfil the above brief and is likely to receive a fail grade.

The assignment asks for a critical analysis. This is not simply a description either of the situation in your organisation or of relevant theory. It means using the theory to explain what went on in your organisation – not just what happened, but why things happened in a particular way and why they led to particular outcomes. Here a critical analysis means evaluating the utility of theory – how far is it of assistance in understanding organisational issues and problems and suggesting recommendations for future practice?
In summary, your assignment needs to do the following:
? demonstrate a critical understanding of a range of relevant literature;
? apply this appropriately in order to analyse one or two organisational topics covered on the module;
? facilitate insights and understanding of both theory and practice and enable conclusions to be drawn about both.

ASSIGNMENT 2: ESSAY QUESTION
The assignment brief is as follows:
Answer one of the following questions below, ensuring that your response is academically underpinned and demonstrates critical insight. The maximum length for this assignment is 1,000 words. This will account for 50% of your overall grade on the module.
1. ‘A strong organisational culture which can be harnessed as a tool of management control helps to both motivate staff, improve company performance and should be encouraged’. Discuss.
2. Why have managers and researchers been so interested in leadership theories to develop effective work performance?
3. What are the main sources of resistance to organisational change and how can resistance be overcome?
4. Compare and contrast the three major political perspectives on conflict and assess which remains to have a realistic explanatory value.
5. How does an understanding of groupwork and teambuilding assist in increasing organisational performance? Use examples from theory and practice to illustrate your answer.

Assignment 2 Guidance
The objective is to encourage you to draw out learning from key module content that is relevant and interesting to you.
The purpose of the assignment is to demonstrate that you have an understanding of a key concept(s) in the module. An assignment that makes little or no reference to appropriate theoretical and conceptual issues is likely to receive a fail grade.
The assignment asks for a critical analysis. This is not simply a description of relevant theory. It means using theory and understanding to answer the question and demonstrate a balanced overview. Here, critical analysis means evaluating academic theory drawn from the library and textbooks and using it as a central part of your response. There is a clear expectation that you will use credible academic sources.
In summary, an assignment needs to do the following:
? demonstrate an understanding of learning from the module;
? use theory relevant to the subject matter covered in the module to answer the question
? enable academically underpinned conclusions to be drawn
