HVDC Cables: Opportunities and Challenges

1. Objectives
(i) To review the topic of HVDC cable technology.
(ii) To produce an individual report in the specified style reviewing recent developments in this topic.

2. Report Structure
You will need to generate your report according to the general format laid out in Appendix A. The main points to remember are:
• It is meant to be a formal report – as you might be required to generate as part of a report to senior management in industry. It should conform to the general style given in Appendix A.

• It should not contain errors of fact or logic.
• It is meant to be as comprehensive as possible and, as such, should draw upon a range of information sources, including the World Wide Web (most up-to-date source of information, but not necessarily reliable) and the technical literature (reliable, but publication times can be long). All sources should be cited clearly.
• The report should include a discussion of the need for HVDC transmission, the evolution of cable technologies for use in this application and current materials challenges, with a particular emphasis on the use of extruded polymeric materials in this application area.

3. Assessment
Each report will be assessed using the mark scheme given in Appendix B.

APPENDIX A

Your report should by up to 6 pages in length, including all elements (figures, references etc.) and should be produced using the two-column format specified by the IEEE Transactions. A style file (TRANS-JOUR) is provided.

Your report should be prepared as if it were going forward to publication – i.e. checked for spelling and other errors and of the highest quality you can produce.
