The following two readings are samples of reflection essays. Sherman Alexie’s essay is a reflection of his reading experiences, and seems to follow a format that is closest to a profile essay. The student sample essay follows a format that is closest to an academic essay format (standard reflection). Before reading and critiquing these essays, read the directions for the Reflection Essay.

Note that the Toolbox contains two student samples. You are welcome to read both, but only the one title “Reflections” is required for this assignment.

PART ONE: In a two to three paragraph reply, respond to these readings by critiquing them. What do you like/dislike about these reflections? Can you find their main ideas? Do they keep your attention? How well do they stack up as models for the reflective essay you need to write? What might be missing? Include specific examples. (These are just sample questions – you don’t need to answer all of them.)
