Purpose of the Assignment
The purpose is to write a stand-alone literature review that addresses a research question.
Once you have determined a topic, you will conduct a literature search to locate six texts on this topic that would be suitable for use as sources in an academic paper; five (or all) of them MUST be research-based articles. When you are searching and selecting your articles, limit the articles’ publication date to within the last seven years.
Drafting the Literature Review
Once you have compiled all of your findings in relation to your research question, you will write an eight page (not including the title and references pages) review of the literature in the field that responds to the question. Feedback both from me and from UWC Online will also be a significant component of this assignment.
Your goal in this literature review paper is NOT necessarily to answer your research question but to review what the nursing literature has to say about your topic and to provide a detailed critique of the literature—where it’s useful and what still needs to be done in the area of your topic. Writing your Lit Review with themes as your guiding headings will be expected in this assignment, and we will talk more about this as we move through the assignment. Being able to analyze and synthesize literature is a strategy you will use repeatedly in your nursing course work, so I want to provide you with an opportunity to work on this without overwhelming you with a large number of sources.

Literature Review
A literature review is an organized summary and discussion of research on a topic. They provide a background on the research that has already been done on a topic, and then synthesize the information to explain the importance of the information presented to the topic.
An effective literature review should be purposefully organized to make sense of the information presented. In other words, the research should not be listed just in the order that you found it. You will need to consider what point you are trying to make about the research that has already been done, and organize it accordingly. The most common method for organizing a literature review is thematically. That is, organize the research according to larger themes within the topic you have researched. Other methods are chronological (best used when there has been major shifts in thinking on a particular topic), or methodological (if there have been different approaches to the studies done on a particular subject).

Discussion Section
This section is where YOUR ideas and analysis shine. Having spent considerable time on a topic, you have gained expertise and can now speak to the research question. While considering your audience (nurses and other medical professionals), what is your interpretation and understanding based on the evidence and sources? What are the implications? How do you respond to the “so what” question? To establish a genuine dialogue and writer’s voice, you may use “I” in the discussion section (for example, I find; I believe; I noticed).
You may also bring in personal experiences that are relevant to the topic. For example, if your topic was bedside reporting and that is a practice being implemented at your workplace, you could cite experiences surrounding that implementation. As well, you might describe how your ideas have changed about the topic. You started with this idea/attitude about topic X and now you have this idea/attitude.
