A concept analysis is an exercise designed to make the student/researcher as familiar as possible with a concept. A concept is usually one or two words that convey meaning, understanding or feelings between or among individuals within a same discipline. A concept analysis is the first step in communicating meanings, understandings and feelings.

Purpose:

The purpose of this paper is to provide an opportunity for the student to explore:

• The concept of the Modern Nurse
  • Search for scholarly literature related to the concept to get a sense of the beliefs, uses, and thoughts of others regarding the concept. Clarify any misconceptions, differences in the definition, any traditional definitions.
  • Begin the analysis paper with a short introductory paragraph expressing what the concept is and why it is significant to you and nursing
• Construct a concept map to show any interrelated/contributing concepts (include this as an appendix and refer to it in the body of your writing).
• Using dictionary definitions and literature support, develop a working definition of the concept.
• Formulate a list of characteristics or defining attributes of the concept. Use clinical and theoretical knowledge, and scholarly literature to complete the list.
• How does your perceptions of the concept compare to others?
  • What is, and what was, societies’ perception of the modern nurse?
  • How does this compare/contrast to your perceptions?
• Your personal motivations for choosing nursing;
  • Why choose nursing, what does it mean to you?
  • How do you see yourself as a modern nurse?

I opted for nursing because of my intrinsic desire to make a positive change in the lives of patients and the wider society. Nursing offers me the opportunity to tend after patients in their worst moments, and there is nothing as fulfilling and satisfying to the soul than the ability to provide support and comfort when most needed.

Moreover, nursing provides the opportunity for continuous learning and professional development. As a dynamic field, with new medical advances and research emerging continuously, nurses are required to stay current with a firm grasp of latest knowledge and industry trends. And since, I am an avid reader and researcher; this will ensure that my patients get quality care.

Thus, nursing means everything to me. Nurses have the capacity to impact patients and families alike. Whether it means holding a patient, ensuring the patient takes drugs as prescribed, or offering emotional and spiritual support, nurses have a role to play in the healing process.

It is also a career with numerous job opportunities, especially with most baby boomers expected to have retired by 2030. The flexibility that comes with nursing makes it ideal for me. This flexibility would allow me to work in schools, clinics and private healthcare facilities or even pursue prospects as a travel nurse who can in any province.

There are few career options that can allow one to pursue their passion and help save lives. However, with nursing, I will provide hope to hopeless, counsel patients and family members and almost certainly celebrate my accomplishments as a nurse.

A Career With Purpose. As a nurse, you can make a personal and lasting impact on your patients every day. You help provide comfort—both emotional and physical. While the work can be challenging, a career in nursing can be fulfilling and meaningful.

Numerous Job Opportunities. Whether you’re an RN ready to earn a bachelor’s degree in nursing, or you’re further along in your education and thinking about enrolling in a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program, it’s good to refresh yourself on the opportunities ahead. More than 270,000 advanced practice registered nurse positions are expected to be created each year from 2020–2030.² In addition, many individuals in the workforce are retiring, so a variety of positions will need to be filled.

Flexibility. Nursing schedules vary person by person. Oftentimes, nurses work 12-hour shifts three or four days a week. This type of schedule allows for shorter work weeks and has caregiving benefits as well. For example, overnight patients could have the same nurse throughout much of their stay, which can be a plus for continuity of care and for building patient rapport. As a registered nurse, flexibility can involve more than scheduling. You can work in a variety of settings ranging from schools and hospitals to private physician offices and clinics. You might even wish to pursue opportunities as a traveling nurse and work throughout the country.

Job Security. There are approximately 73 million baby boomers in the United States, all of whom will have reached retirement age by 2030.³ Not only does this mean there will be nursing positions to fill, but with such a large aging population, the demand for nurses will be great.

Fast-Paced Environment. Although the skills for nurses can be similar, the environments can be vastly different. So, when you choose a nursing specialty, it’s important to keep the type of environment in mind. For example, if you want to work with patients and families of all ages, you may want to pursue an MSN degree with a family nurse practitioner specialization. Other specializations could include pediatric nursing, psychiatric-mental health nursing, nursing informatics, public health nursing, adult-gerontology primary care, adult-gerontology acute care, nursing education, or nursing leadership.

Career Advancement. Nurses have the opportunity to specialize in many different fields. Employers are emphasizing the importance of nurses holding a bachelor’s degree, but if you want to become a nurse leader or nurse manager, you’ll need a master’s degree in nursing. To get to the highest educational level of your nursing career, select a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) or a PhD in Nursing.

The Ability to Improve Caregiving. RNs are a strong voice in the healthcare industry. In fact, the code of ethics produced by the American Nurses Association (ANA) states, “the nurse promotes, advocates for, and protects the rights, health, and safety of the patient.”⁴ As a nurse, you act as an advocate, making sure the needs of your patients are met, and similarly, that your patients have the right to make decisions regarding their own care.

Few career choices allow you to realize your passion while at the same time, helping save lives. You offer hope, counsel families, and often celebrate some of life’s most important events as a nurse.
