Summary of the article and annotated bibliography
Description
Summary of the article (2 pages – 600 words) and annotated bibliography (400 words for 4 sources).
Article summary and evaluation: For this assignment, take a close look at one peer-reviewed article from a scholarly or professional journal in your intended major field, published within the last five years. Generally, appropriate articles will be at least ten pages long and will describe original research conducted by the author(s). Do not choose an editorial, book review, or other very short piece. Avoid articles that you do not fully understand or do not feel qualified to evaluate.
In a 2 to 3-page essay, summarize and evaluate this article. The summary portion of the essay (maximum of 1 page) should describe, entirely in your own words, the question or problem that the article explores, the significance of this question, the central claims the article makes and the conclusion the author reaches, and the evidence the author uses to support his or her conclusion (for example: did the author perform a study or experiment? Analyze a document? Cite the findings of other researchers?)
Your evaluation (1 1/2 to 2 pages) should address how persuasive you find this evidence and why. For example, if the author conducted a study showing that children who watch violent television shows are more likely to display aggressive behavior, you should look at factors such as the size of the study, how successfully the author controlled for other variables that might affect the children’s behavior, and how the results were measured. You would then use this information to argue that this study does or does not provide solid evidence that there is a link between media violence and aggression.
Annotated bibliography: Using the footnotes or list of references from the article you wrote about for your previous assignment, the library databases, and the online catalogue, locate at least four of the sources that the author of your original article referenced and read them for yourself. These should include previous work by other scholars and professionals working on similar topics. They must be sources that you are able to locate in full-text version (not just a summary or abstract); remember that if the library databases do not contain the full text of the source, you may be able to access it through interlibrary loan. (If you cannot find four accessible sources in the bibliography of your original article, you may also backtrack further and use the author’s sources’ sources.)
List your four sources in an annotated bibliography, alphabetized by author’s name and formatted according to the guidelines of an appropriate style for the academic field (for example, APA for the social sciences). Each entry should be followed by a brief summary of the source (two to three sentences per article, completely in your own words with no direct quotations). Your summary should focus on the central claims of each article and what the author(s) concluded; you do not need to discuss methods in detail.
