Water Pollution Oceanography

To complete your “essay”, you must include a combination of videos, data visualizations (e.g. graphs,
maps of data, etc.), and still images. Each source of information must be appropriately referenced. In
addition, you must follow the outline listed below. If you cannot find information for any of these areas,
consider a different topic to investigate. (Sections that students commonly do not include are included
in red text…make sure you do all parts!)
• description of the natural parts of the earth/ocean systems that are relevant to the issue
• a summary of the issue that incorporates use of some of the concepts we addressed in this class
• a careful and robust summary of the relevant science concepts and processes that must be considered
to understand the issue (e.g. explanation about longshore currents to consider coastal erosion)
i. this section at least should include some form of data as evidence to support the clam that there
is a specific issue; preferred evidence is graphs, maps etc., rather a couple of data pts mentioned
in the text your write…but what you can include will depend on the issue.
ii. It also must include text you compose that explains important scence concepts and points made
from the courses you use
• a summary of non-science concepts that might be relevant to understand the issue (e.g. no one
regulates the open ocean, etc.)
• summary of the impacts of the issue (either documented or predicted); these should include impacts
on (data/evidence could be useful here too):
i. the natural system(s)
ii. and on other areas (e.g. economic, ethical, etc.)
• summary of potential solutions to the issue and what it might take to implement them
• critically analyze the recommendations for solutions proposed or implemented…consider the pro’s
and con’s (e.g. will they impact another natural system? Will they negatively or positively impact
any human communities? etc.) Data/evidence might be helpful here too.
• For all images you include, text that you compose should be added to them that summarizes the key
points from them that you want readers to take away from them. Images of data should be
accompanied by text that summarizes the data patterns, both descriptively and quantitatively.
