WEEK 8 DISCUSSION INSTRUCTIONS

The purpose of this activity is for students to discuss the issues concerning the high costs of health care on both a macro and micro economic scale.

Objectives
•Recognize the costs of health care and how it affects individuals and other aspects of the U.S. economy.
•Understand the contributing factors that increase health care costs.
Assignment Instructions
Step 1: Individual Initial Posting
Review the Week 8 video lectures, readings, and watch the interview with Dr. Susan Farner. Address the following questions:
•Given all the reasons for increasing costs of health care, what would you do to decrease the costs or change this trend?
•What do you think are the highest contributing reasons for the high costs and why (technology, aging population, malpractice, defensive medicine, profit, etc.)?
•How do you plan on being prepared to pay more money out of pocket for health care during your professional career? Do you think you will have to shift priorities to accommodate the rising out of pocket costs?
•What do you think will happen if costs continue to rise?
